Future Arts and Cornish+ Present:

CUT, CRUSH, DECAY: a mixed reality dance installation

Working across disciplines of dance, mixed reality and sculpture design, Future Arts designed a large-scale, interactive installation in downtown Seattle in Fall 2023. Multiple tools, such as augmented reality (AR), AI-driven motion capture, and mycelium were used to intertwine and expand creative interaction through this public art mural. A 18-minute documentary film was made to document the intertwined creation process over 9 months.

Premiered at Cornish College of the Arts Fall 2023

CUT, CRUSH, DECAY is a 40 foot mixed-reality installation made from baltic birch, neon acrylic, and a bespoke biomaterial title design. Ground vinyl QR codes activate a generative augmented reality layer that is geospatially registered to the physical installation, coming alive through web-based platform, 8th Wall, accessible through any mobile device.

Thank you for all who attended our tours and interacted with our mural and our tours in Fall 2023. We are proud of all the incredible work of the artists, students, fabricators, filmmakers, technologists, and creatives that participated in creating this massive project.

Fusion of Art, Tech, and Nature

AI generated 3d model of a student dancer

Throughout 2023, Future Arts led a collaboration with Cornish College of the Arts faculty and students and local technology-focused artists to celebrate the launch of their new community-based education program, Cornish+. Grounding in the biomimicry theme of mycelium networks as interconnected systems, this artwork builds a metaphor for trusting a truly collaborative, generative approach to process.

Working across disciplines of dance, augmented reality, sculpture design, and emerging technologies such as AI-powered motion capture (MOVE.AI) and DYI mycelium (Grow.BIO), the interdisciplinary team generated a mixed reality, large-scale, interactive installation. Launched September 15th at Cornish College of the Arts Campus, public tours were available with accessibility support, including a showing of a behind-the-scenes documentary film and discussions with creatives.
